20th Anniversary of The Bead Project at UrbanGlass
In 2017, Ghislaine Sabiti and I were invited to co-curate a milestone exhibit to honor 20 years of The Bead Project at UrbanGlass. The Bead Project is a scholarship program for creatively inclined, economically disadvantaged women. Over the course of ten classes at UrbanGlass, students learn flame-working and glass bead-making, basic jewelry fabrication techniques, and entrepreneurial skills to develop a business plan, including online promotional tools.
For the 20th anniversary exhibit, Bead Project alumnae submitted many types of work — jewelry, sculpture, wall-hung work and more. Participating artists responded to themes of how their artwork relates to womanhood, and our exhibit as a spectacular garden where we contribute flowers, grass, pollinators and other animals.
Below are some installation-in-progress shots.
